Diablo 3

I guess we can’t call this a delay…cause they never officially announced a date to begin with. Having said that, fans and devs alike seemed to be quite keen on getting Diablo III into player’s hands this year but, sadly, that isn’t going to happen. Blizzard has passed down word that they need more time to polish the long-awaited sequel and, as such, have decided to push its release back to 2012. On the upside, the Diablo III beta will run longer and invite more players.

Sorry PC fans, but Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Rocksteady have announced that Batman: Arkham City won’t be unleashing its  pure awesomeness on your favorite platform until November.

The game is still scheduled to hit the PS3 and 360 as planned in October.

So was anybody going to get this game on PC anyway? What are your thoughts on the Delay? Could it be to avoid first day/weel piracy of the game? Let us know below.

Having shut down Kaos Studios, the folks behind the original Homefront, THQ today announced that the next title in the franchise will be developed by multi-award winning FPS veterans Crytek.

“We see Homefront as a really strong universe that has a lot of potential and that has been expertly created and marketed by    THQ,” said Cevat Yerli, Founder, CEO and President of Crytek. “We believe that bringing our level of quality, creativity and production values to the next Homefront title creates an opportunity for both THQ and Crytek to deliver a truly blockbuster game. It’s really important to us that THQ has the faith in giving us a lot of creative freedom over one of its most important properties to allow us to bring the Homefront world to life in a new and innovative way.”

The yet-to-be-named sequel is scheduled for release in THQ’s fiscal year  of 2014 and will be released on both consoles and PC platforms.

So, what do you think of this development? Does this spark new interest in the franchise for you when considering Crytek’s obvious track record? Let’s hear your thoughts below.

dead shot

Revealed by Game Director Sefton Hill, the villain Deadshot will be joining the robust roster of baddies in Arkham City. After finding his own way into Arkham City, Deadshot, who’s been given a hearty visual makeover, is introduced in-game through a series of investigations when Batman tries to trace a series of murders of “very specific people” and discover the motive. Expect to put Batman’s forensic skills to work as you take on the side mission featuring Deadshot and attempt to crack the case along with a few skulls.

Are you guys excited for the inclusion of Deadshot? Batman: Arkham City is on of my most anticipated games this fall. Lets hope it lives up to the hype and doesn’t drive us batty.

3DS Second analog nub

The 3DS is in the news again. Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu has shown off an advertisement (Above)  for a second analog attachment for the Nintendo 3DS. To me, this attachment looks really bulky but apparently it serves another purpose. Famitsu has also mentioned that Monster Hunter Tri (3G), a title originally based off the Nintendo Wii version, will release specifically for the second analog attachment and is said to support local multiplayer, 12 weapon classes, underwater battles, and best of all, a new cover monster! (<—Sarcasm)

So what are your guys reactions to the second analog nub? Do you plan on picking it up? How about Monster Hunter Tri? Leave your comments below.

Today while I was surfing the web, a good friend of mine sent me a picture he found taken at a Japanese Gaming store.

BF3 2DISKS

As you can see Battlefield 3 will be on TWO disks on the Xbox 360. Granted the scope of the game this is probably not that big of a shocker. I am guessing one disk will be for the single player experience while the other ill contain the multiplayer experience.

Do any of you gamers care that a game is on multiple disks on one platform? I remember when L.A Noire came out, Xbox fans were outraged….THREE DISKS..RAWR!!!  Leave your thoughts below.

Payday: The Heist

Today, the official PlayStation blog brought word  that three upcoming PSN titles have been dated.

First up is Rochard, which will be hitting PSN on September 27, 2011 for $9.99. As described in the PlayStation Blog post, “Rochard puts you in the shoes of astro-miner John Rochard as he uses his wits and everyday mining tools to fend off space pirates. You must save his team of missing miners and solve the mystery behind the discovery of an ancient alien artifact.”

Next up is the game I am most excited about, PAYDAY: The Heist will land on PSN October 4, 2011 and sell for $19.99. The game  throws you straight into the action with high-stake heists, including bank robberies, prisoner extractions and armored car hijackings, you are forced to work as a team to control incredibly intense situations. To me it is like Left 4 Dead…with bank robberies…awesome.

Finally we have Sideway: New York. This game puts players in the role of Nox, a graffiti artist sucked into a twisted graffiti world, where you will explore the backstreets of New York City and navigate through a 2D adventure platformer set in a 3D world. Sideway: New York will be available October 11th for download on PSN for $9.99.

So what are your thoughts on these games? Are you excited to check any (or all) of them out? Let us know below.

Downloadable games (DLG) have taken the gaming scene by storm over the past couple of years. With more and more people having internet access available to them, they are able to connect to the internet and download some of the best games on the market today. Another awesome perk about DLG’s is their pricing. You are able to get games that offer 6-10 hours of enjoyment for 5-15 dollars….that’s a steal. Now there are many different outlets to get these types of games. You have the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, WiiWare and PC/Steam. Today I am going give you MY top 5 Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA) games. Here we go.

5. Castle Crashers (1200 Microsoft Points)

Castle Crashers

The Guys over at Behemoth studios showed us that if you work hard and create one of the best flash games of all time (Alien Hominid) then you are on your way to bigger and better things. That is exactly what we got when they released “Castle Crashers.” An old school beat’ em up with that distinctive Behemoth art style.

This game is a joy to play solo but the real fun begins when you get three of your buddies and go through the campaign together. What also is great about this game is the replay value. Whether it is to level up and existing character (Blue Ice Knight all the way) or starting a new character (with his own unique set of special abilities) from scratch. With a lengthy campaign, fun co-op , and that signature Behemoth charm, “Castle Crashers” is an XBLA title everyone should own.

4. Costume Quest (1200 Microsoft Points)

Costume

See...Charm

When I heard that Tim Schafer and Double Fine productions were set to be releasing four downloadable XBLA games, I flipped. I have always been a fan of Tim Schafer’s work and “Grim Fandango” continues to be one of my favorite games of all time. So when I heard from a friend that their first DLG was going to be a RPG, I was even more excited.

Then, “Costume Quest” was released. I first want to tell you about the charm that this game possesses. My girlfriend hates video games. Well, she might not hate them but she sure doesn’t play any of them. It must be a rule at her sorority…no “Bioshock” in the house. So she doesn’t even know what an RPG is, but on Halloween after we got back from a party I downloaded “Costume Quest” and she fell in love with it.

Everything about this game is well done and just…damn….awesome. The story, the characters, the power ups are all amazing and as usual that Tim Schafer sense of humor shines through the whole way. Quick premise: You are a young boy/girl who has to rescue their sibling from goblins who mistake her as a giant candy corn.

Throughout the game you collect costumes that transform you into what that costume represents….reminds me of when I was young. They have a wide array of costumes, from a robot all the way to a unicorn…that kicks ass. “Costume Quest” is definitely the sleeper on this list and if you haven’t yet, you should go download it…you won’t be sorry.

3.  Bastion (1200 Microsoft Points)

bastion

Although Bastion has just been released on XBLA it has already stolen a place in my heart. This is the first released from Super Giant Games. Super Giant Games includes Greg Kasavin, who I watched all the time back when he was on Gamepot.

I have tremendous respect for the man and when I found out he was releasing his own game, I knew I had to check it out. Bastion is a unique game. It features a narrator who narrates everything you do in the world. What was amazing to me is that in this 6-8 hour experience, I did not hear the same line repeated once.

The game plays very much like a top down action game with loot collecting, multiple weapons and spells. Another thing about Bastion that was awesome was the soundtrack. An amazing score was put together for this game. Bastion is an incredible game that everybody should pick up this summer. To see our full review of the game click HERE.

2.  Shadow Complex (1200 Microsoft Points)

Shadow Complex

Back in the NES days there was a little game that came out that would define a genre. That game was Metroid. Gone were the days of just running from left to right and advancing to the next level. Metroid gave you a huge map to explore and tons of things to do/find. Castlevania would eventually adopt this formula and it brought them some of their most successful titles. Now, there is Shadow Complex. Shadow Complex was the first game put our by Chair Studios a subsidiary of Epic Games. (Chair went on to make the hit game “Infinity Blade” for the iPhone/iPad).

From the open world map, the hidden collectable power-ups to the backtracking to unlock new areas, Shadow Complex pays homage to everything that was great about the original Metroid. It doesn’t hurt the fact that this game feels like your playing a summer blockbuster. The mix between 2D and 3D action segments is great, there is just enough challenge for you to enjoy, and again there is great replay ability. Shadow Complex is an amazing XBLA game and if it is not apart of your library, go get it….now. This game would have been number one if it was not for….

1. Limbo (1200 Microsoft Points)

limbo

Limbo is in my definition a piece of art. Limbo is the first game to come out of Danish developer Play dead and boy did they hit it out of the park. Play Dead does not try to over complicate things with this game. They don’t give you a background story, they don’t give you voices, heck…they don’t even give you music for most of the game. All they so is drop you into this world and say “here…go.” One of the reasons why this game resonates with me is the art style. Never before has a game in black and white been so beautifully captured. Limbo won the award for “Best Visual Art” at the Game Developers Choice awards and it was well deserved. Another amazing thing about Limbo is the sense of tension you have while playing through it. I jumped multiple times throughout this game…not because it is scary but because of the connection you build with the main character…only to have it taken away by some of the most horrifying deaths seen in a game. There were moments in this game when I just yelled…”oh shit…this giant spider is coming to ge…oh crap, impaled right through the chest.” Limbo is a puzzle game at heart and the puzzles were just difficult enough to make you think but not make you throw your controller at the television. Limbo is in my opinion the best game that XBLA has to offer. There is no multilayer, replay value is minimalistic but the experience is like none you have ever played or will play again.

So there you have it, my top 5 Xbox Live Arcade downloadable games. Do you guys agree with the list? What are some of your favorite XBLA games? Leave your comments below.

Recently, Capcom released “Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D” for the Nintendo 3DS. The game was mediocre at best and gamers everywhere were upset that Capcom only included one non-erasable game save slot. I know a few folks who are still freaking out about this decision.

Now “Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D” is not the first game to include this feature. Will it be the last and what impact will it have on us, the players?

To begin, does anybody remember the days when games didn’t have the ability to save at all? Ha, I was born in 1990 so the NES era had just passed, but I grew up with games that didn’t even have the ability to save (with a few exceptions of course). So what this basically amounted to was me leaving my system on for days at a time, hoping to God that my Mom or Dad didn’t find the system and shut it off. After a little while Nintendo found a way to save on cartridges…Thank God, could you imagine trying to collect EVERY star in “Super Mario 64” without a save slot? Even though saving was getting more common, the Nintendo 64/PlayStation/PS2 era still forced us to buy memory cards to save our progress in a bunch of games.

Fast forward 10 years. The times have drastically changed. Ever since the original Xbox included a hard drive in their console it has become common place for new systems to do the same. Not only do we as gamers expect a hard drive, we expect more and more storage on them. Sorry Nintendo Wii and your 500 mbs of on board memory…your not getting it done for us.

So it’s peculiar that Capcom has taken this approach. Since they only included one non-erasable slot they essentially cut out both the USED and RENTAL markets for this game (GameFly has taken the game off of their site). If you were to rent this game you would not be able to start from the beginning. You would have to start wherever the person before you left off. Imagine playing “Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” and having to start from the Water Temple with no explanation of the story, weapons, etc….What the hell is a hook shot?

Now Capcom was not the first to do this. “Zookeeper”, “The Sims 2” all include this feature. Most recently “Super Monkey Ball 3D” for the 3DS included the same one save feature, yet nobody complained…hmm, interesting.

How will this effect us as gamers?

This is another step in the whole “Used Games Debate” between developers and retailers. If you remember late last year with the release of “Madden 2011” EA also brought with it the “Online pass.” The online pass is basically a way for developers/publishers to make more money off of used games sales and take a bite out of Gamestop/other major used game retailers. It called for the user to pay ten dollars if they bought the game used in order to unlock the games online content. Since then more and more developers have adopted the “online pass.” On top of that we now have this one save feature, yet another jab at the used game market.

As a gamer I get more and more worried each passing year about these things. During these hard economic times, used games are essential to millions of gamers out there. It is wrong knowing that they are not getting the full experiences that people who buy new games get.

I just hope this trend doesn’t move over to other mediums. I would hate to buy a used book with the last 50 pages cut out of it.

So tell me what you guys think in the comments below. What is your opinion on the “One-Save” game feature? Where do you stand on the “Used Games Debate”? Any other concerns/comments?
