For the next three days, I have convinced myself that I won’t be getting any real work done at my job.  E3 2012 is upon us and that means three days of breakthrough announcements, upcoming title reveals, and Reggie Fils-Aime from Nintendo somehow making a fool of himself.  If you’re wondering when the big three game companies as well as the some game developers are presenting their keynote speeches, below is the official E3 schedule of when their conferences will be held.

Monday, June 4

  • Microsoft Press Conference ( 9:30 am – 11:00 am PT)
  • EA Press Conference ( 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm PT)
  • Ubisoft Press Conference (3:00 pm – 4:00 pm PT)
  • Sony Press Conference ( 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm PT)
Tuesday, June 5
  • Nintendo Press Conference ( 9:00 am – 10:00 am PT)

As you can see, it’s quite similar to that of last year’s schedule.  You can watch the conferences live on the company websites, so definitely check them out to be there when the big announcements are revealed.

Also, be sure to check the site for updates on today’s announcements as well as commentary from the staff.  The Gaming Irresponsibly team would like to wish our readers a Happy E3!

Similar to that of Call of Duty, EA confirmed that it will offer a Battlefield Premium service for Battlefield 3.  Though the company had plans to announce more details next week, a fact sheet was leaked online detailing what the service will include.

According to the sheet, the premium service will allow players first access to upcoming expansion packs for Battlefield 3, more customizable options for soldiers, and receive a number of exclusive in game items.  The cost will be $49.99, which is a one time fee for the service.  According to the one sheet, the service will be available on June 4,2012.

Some other interesting feature of the premium pack is that players will have the ability to reset score/minute, kill/death, etc.  Also, premium players will get first priority in servers.

The sheet also lists the five expansion packs for the package: Back to Karkand, Close Quarters, Armored  Kill, Aftermath, End Game.

Judging by the long list of features included in the premium service, in all honestly, it seems like a solid deal.  You not only get the expansion packs at a discounted rate, but plenty more with the package.  If the features listed are true, I can foresee the service being quite popular with Battlefield 3 fans.

A settlement has been reached in the Call of Duty lawsuit between Activision and creators Jason West and Vince Zampella.

Though the settlement has been agreed upon, attorneys state that the terms of the settlement are strictly confidential.

“We have reached a settlement in this matter as to all parties and all claims,” said attorney Daniel Petrocelli. “Dismissals will be filed soon.”

Activision also did not comment on the settlement results, but released a short statement staying that the lawsuit will not have an impact on their earnings for this year.

“The company does not believe that the incremental one-time charges related to the settlement will result in a material impact on its GAAP or non-GAAP earnings per share outlook for the current quarter or the calendar year, due to stronger-than-expected operating performance in the current quarter.”

Though the case was going to go to trial, reports say that on Wednesday, the both sides’ lawyers met behind closed doors to discuss a settlement in the case.  Those at the courthouse when a settlement was reached say that West and Zampella looked quite pleased as they exited the courthouse.  I would be too if I won a court case against a gaming publishers that refused millions of dollars worth of bonuses for the success of my game.

It is now confirmed that a Shadow of the Colossus film is in development with Sony Pictures penciling in the director and producer spots.

Deadline confirmed that Chronicle director Josh Trank will helm the project with Kevin Misher producing.  Sony is currently interviewing writers to pen the Playstation 2 masterpiece.

An adaptation of the film has been in the works since 2009 where screenwriter Justin Marks was in talks to write the script.  However, since then, the film has been in development hell.

Trank already has a busy schedule after his widely popular hit Chronicle from a few months back.  The up and coming director has been in talks to reboot the Fantastic Four series as well as direct a Venom feature film, chronicling the life of the Spiderman villain.

With the fairly poor track record of film adaptations of video games, I am a bit worried how a Shadow of the Colossus film will turn out.  The game itself remains one of my favorite games of all time, and I would hate to see it ruined because of Holly-weird’s treatment of the material.

Note: After a long month and a half, I am back with a slight vengeance….for something.

A US has recommended the that Xbox 360 console be banned in the US based on the console’s apparent infringement on several patents.

According the to Judge David Shaw, Microsoft had infringed on four patents owned by Motorola.  The patents themselves are video codec based in which Motorola claims it is indeed their techonology.  Shaw asked the International Trade Commission to send out cease and desist orders to the software giant for a ban on Slim and the 250 GB models.

Shaw also recommends that Microsoft post bond that would equal to 7% of the value of unsold Xboxs.  Microsoft has asked for 2.5%, while Motorola has requested a ridiculous 100%.

If the decision is made to ban the sale of the Xbox 360, President Obama must review the case during a 60 day period.  If that time window expires, the issue is off to the Court of Appeals in the Federal Circuit.

In a time where space exploration combined with open world gameplay is a popular trend in video games, the Mass Effect series is a perfect example of how it should be done.  The series has dominated the genre for a number of years for consoles.  Those who enjoy the PC route more can get the same enjoyment out of space exploration, without the heavy PC specs.  Black Market, a sci fi independent title, combines a great script, characters, exploration, and above all science fiction, for a fraction of the price for a AAA title.

Black Market‘s simple plot involves a pirate trader named Vincent Wake, who awakens after having a unknown surgery.  To his surprise,  he now has a eye patch with a talking voice in it named Hardgrove.  Hardgrove, serving as the comic relief throughout the title, assists you on your journey full of space combat, criminal families, sinister corporations, and of course, illicit drugs!  It’s a fairly detailed storyline that almost could have been developed a bit more, but the vast amount of enjoyable characters as well as the witty and humorous dialogue make up for the so-so plot.  For a dark game like this one, the developers manage to go for more of the comedic route than a dramatic one, making the title ever more memorable.

The title can be said as more like space simulation rather than an entirely action game.  Trading pays a big part in the title with many of the missions gearing more towards buying and selling intergalactic space goods.  That’s not to say space combat isn’t thrown into the mix.  The trading parts works in that there are literary hundreds of items one can salvage or buy to gain funds for improving one’s ship.  Items range from gallons of water to illicit small arms.  Space combat is nothing too special with players using their cursor to click on a ship to fire their weapons.  Players can also move the ship left and right of the screen to dodge incoming enemy fire.  It’s fairly simple to say the least, but of course it can be challenging at times.  If one comes into battle without the proper weaponry, it can mean losing your ship, and collecting funds to find a new one (which is incredibly time consuming and ulcer inducing in the early parts of the game).

There are a wide range of enemies throughout the title coming from different factions throughout the universe.  Depending on how friendly you are or how much of a dick you are to your enemies can result in a fight.  On the game’s main screen map, players travel from planet to planet, but can wind up fighting an enemy on the way.  The game does a great job giving you options on how to proceed whether that be fighting them, begging for mercy, bribing them, or just good old threatening them.  Depending on each choice, the game gives players odds whether or not the option was a success.  The actual enemy AI however is a bit unpolished.  During battles, enemies would often not even fire at me throughout the duration.  On the world map, I would get corner by at least five enemy ships.  After defeating one and returning to the main screen, I was immediately set to fight another one.  These instances can be incredibly frustrating.

One thing to note is the vast size and playability of the title.  There are countless missions one can take part in with a galaxy size that is incredible.  With a large number of planets plus at least 15 missions per planet, players can expect to be playing this title for a while.  The missions themselves are different in terms of the situation, but the objectives remain similar to other ones.  Blow up a ship, trade some drugs, repeat.  I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily a bad thing, but those looking for more of a variety will be a bit disappointed.

The developers do a great job with the overall graphical and artistic design of the title.  What’s the most impressive is that each location is designed much differently from one another, which gives the title a bit more creative flair to it.  With the numerous amount of locations, each location has a different feel from the rest.  The ship designs during the space combat sequences are rendered nicely with nice foreground and background imagery.  Music wise, you get some fairly nice background music during exploration and combat, as well as different music for each planet you land on.  However, the game really could have used a voice track for the dialogue.  With all the witty lines, it would have be nice to have people act out the lines, instead of having to read them.

Overall, Black Market is well balanced and much enjoyable science fiction title that breathes fresh air into the genre.  The title can be said to be similar to that of the 2003 space simulator Freelancer, which is equally well done.  However, if you are burnt out from Mass Effect and want to try something new in the genre, definitely pick up Black Market.  The scope of the title promises hours of enjoyable gameplay that doesn’t put a hole in your wallet with the title price and DLC.

Reports are circulating around the web that the upcoming Wii U system will retail around $300 upon its release.

The source, who reportedly works in the manufacturing and distribution of Nintendo products, released information on the cost of manufacturing the Wii U.  According to the report, the Wii U console and controller costs $180 to create along with an additional $50 for other materials and components.  Based on those figures, the report states that Nintendo will sell the system for no less than $300.

“They are cutting costs in the Wii U’s hardware to build back confidence in investors. Nintendo wants investors to view Wii U as a less risky proposition,” stated the source in an interview with Forget the Box.

The original Wii retailed at $250 upon its release back in 2006, so an increase in price for the next Nintendo system is no surprise.  Hell, it will most likely be the least expensive of the three next generation systems, so $300 isn’t too bad if the rumor is true.

Now, I’m not too familiar with the “Roguelike” genre.  Actually to be perfectly honest, playing Cardinal Quest is the one of the very rare occasions that I play these types of games.  Most people would be turned off by the complexity of these titles.  However, Cardinal Quest manages to provide beginner Roguelikes with a easy and quite enjoyable experience that suits all gamers.

The thin storyline explains that a hellish minotaur named Asterion descended to wreak havoc on the small town of Hallemot, enslaving your people.  Your character manages to escape at a young age and through the years trains and grows stronger to one day fight Asterion.  It is on that day that your character enters the lair, which holds Asterion, to finally kill the beast and save the land.  It’s a classic 8-bit plot with no real depth to it.  No additional dialogue or other information is given till the end of the game, which is a bit of a disappointment.

Players choose from three classes of fighters before beginning the title: a warrior, thief, and wizard.  Each one of them has different skills levels as well as a difficulty standard for gamers.  Gameplay wise, players move around various dungeon floors, killing off enemies, collecting weapons/spell, etc.  Along the way, various types of enemies stand in your way on your journey, each having different powers and difficulty from the other.  This variety keeps the title challenging yet fresh.  Believe me, you’ll be fighting off countless types of enemies during your journey.

To attack, players simply run into an opponent, which causes damage to them.  Players can also utilize the various magic spells in the game as there are a wide variety of them. The simplicity of the game, especially for the gameplay, makes it easy for anyone to pick up the title and go.  Its simple mechanics make it enjoyable to play.   One issue I did have with the title is that it almost was too fast pace for me.  Your character and enemies are constantly moving at high frame rate, so it’s difficult to take a break in game with so much going on around you.

The 8-Bit graphics and music are a nice nostalgic touch the title.  It’s interesting to see indie developers bringing back the old school style of graphics and music to today’s age.  The enemies are detailed enough for some variety between types.  The dungeons themselves however could have used an additional touch of creativeness.  Though each dungeon in different in terms of structure, the game simply chooses a different color for each of them, which is a bit lazy if you ask me.

Overall, Cardinal’s Quest is a good title for those looking for a Roguelike genre game.  It’s easy enough for beginners to pick up and play, and will be enjoyable for those who are more skilled at these types of games.  At the very reasonable price of $4.45, Cardinal Quest is a solid adventure fantasy title for all.

Business website The Consumerist recently announced that Electornic Arts was named the 2012 “Worst Company in America” by the voting public beating out Bank of America for the “top” prize.  Now, EA has formally responded to the title.

“We’re sure that bank presidents, oil, tobacco and weapons companies are all relieved they weren’t on the list this year. We’re going to continue making award-winning games and services played by more than 300 million people worldwide,”said John Reseburg, a higher up in the company’s Corporate Communications division.

Earning 64% of the vote against Bank of America, it’s no surprise that the software giant was voted the worst by the public.  In the last few years, the company has received backlash from taking over small publishers to their faulty Origin network.

“Readers ultimately decided that the type of greed exhibited by EA, which is supposed to be making the world a more fun place, is worse than Bank of America’s avarice, which some would argue is the entire point of operating a bank,”said the Consumerist article.

EA was the only video game related publisher to be in the contest.  Gamestop as well as Best Buy managed to make the list, but lost after the first few rounds.

In an interesting turn of events, reports are now circulating that the upcoming Wii U may not be as powerful as Nintendo had stated in the past.

GamesIndustry surveyed several developers who are currently developing Wii U titles and have stated that the system is definitely not as powerful as the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.  Also mentioned was the fact that the tablet like control is quite a bothersome to work with.

“It’s not up to the same level as the PS3 or the 360,” said one developer. “The graphics are just not as powerful.”

“It doesn’t produce graphics as well as the PS3 or the 360,” another developer stated.  “There aren’t as many shaders, it’s not as capable. Overall the Wii U just can’t quite keep up.”

When the system was revealed at E3 2011, Nintendo had mentioned that the graphical capabilities would be in line with the other two household systems.  However, it seems like Nintendo has pulled the old innovation rather than power card again, similar to that of the Wii.  So far, no comment from Nintendo concerning the study, though it would interesting to see what they have to say about this.

With it being 2012 and according to those crazy Mayans, the world will be a wasteland, why not start with a little apocalyptic simulation courtesy of Ubisoft Shanghai’s new survival title I Am Alive.  The title, which has been in development since 2008, mixes platforming, a little bit of action, and fairly good storytelling that turns out to be one of the most disturbing titles so far this year, despite its adventure genre status.

I Am Alive tells the story of Adam, a husband and father of one who has finally reached the city of Haventon in search of his wife and daughter.  Ever since “The Event” took place a year ago, the world is not the same.  A global environmental disaster wiped out a habitual environment for living things with it killing off a majority of the planet.  All that remains is ruined cities and a toxic haze that lurks in the air, with those who are fortunate to be alive, fighting to survive.

One of the Many Breathtaking Views

It’s a simple plot with little explained about “The Event” or the outcome of the rest of the planet outside of Haventon, but it’s nice to have a title where players are placed in the aftermath of a disaster instead hundreds of cutscenes explaining what happened.  Adam is a likable and interesting character, but a little more background on him would have been nice (along with the supporting characters).  Whereas 99% of games have a main antagonist, I Am Alive oddly enough does not have one, which to me was a great choice.  In a hellish environment like this one, everyone is your enemy and trust is the matter of life and death, so having a super villain would have been inappropriate for a title like this.

Gameplay wise, the title mixes both Assassin’s Creed platforming and first person action sequences.  Platforming itself is most of the game, with players have the ability to climb, swing, and jump from numerous pieces of objects in the destructed city.  There is not as much freedom as something like Assassin’s Creed, but I enjoyed the platforming overall.  It’s just something about climbing a towering skyscraper hundreds of feet in the air that gives an adrenaline rush.  One issue I did have is the controls, especially, with the platforming.  Sometimes, your character won’t be responsive in making a leap or will jump the incorrect way.  Controlling the camera is a nightmare in these parts of the game as well.

People Will Do Anything to Snag A Ticket to The Hunger Games

I Am Alive is definitely no walk in the park in terms of difficulty, and one aspect of the title that takes part in making your life a living hell is the stamina meter.  Now in no way is the stamina meter a bad thing, it’s actually presents a nice challenge to the game.  Every time your character runs, jumps, climbs, breaths in toxic fumes, your stamina meter depletes.  Once the meter hits zero, you’re character begins to lose health or loses his grip on a ledge.  Overall, the stamina bar forces the player to plan out how to climb a skyscraper more carefully to prevent, you know, death.  Also, I found myself on the edge of my seat every time I climbed an object, so it definitely keeps you on your feet.

One big prop to the development team is the production design for the title.  The destructive environment that is the city of Haventon is designed so well that it’s truly a treat for the eyes.  In one memorizing sequence, you climb the tallest skyscraper in the city.  To stand on the edge of the tower and look at the ruined city below is one of the most rewarding yet shocking images to set your eyes upon.  However, all is not particular well in the graphics area.  Though the lighting design and grainy look of the game worked, the graphics in general seemed severely outdated.  From blurring walls to environments loading, the game is not the prettiest in terms of basic graphics, but the design overall is excellent.

Though, all enemies are essentially the same, they are a challenge nonetheless.  The minimal fighting elements are effective in that it’s not all run and gun, but players are truly challenged with the lack of resources.  I may have received a total of 15 bullets the entire game.  Every time you are ambushed, players must find a way to strategize which enemies to attack first (the one with the gun or the one with armor) or to surprise kill them.  There’s a limited amount of combat maneuvers one can do in I Am Alive, but the game more so focuses on the depth of the action sequences rather than weapon types and power ups.  Also, the character interaction with enemies is beyond brilliant.  For example, some enemies will retreat if you point a gun at them, loaded or not loaded.  However, point a gun or run away from someone who does have one, they instantly fire upon you.  It’s interactions like these that truly make I Am Alive one of kind.

Probably Best Not to Look Down....

The title is roughly four hours long, which is fairly on the short side in my opinion.  The title could have easily been extended a good hour or so because the ending itself had potential to continue.  Throughout the title, save points are only in between chapters, which are roughly 30 min or so in length.  This is where the challenge of the title is more of a nuisance rather than enjoyable.  Players gain restarts throughout the game by helping those who don’t want to kill you with providing them food and other survival items.  You help a folk out, you get a restart.  Every time you die, players are forced to use a restart for a checkpoint and once you run out, back to the start of the chapter for you.  It would not have been bad if the developers had allowed to save between checkpoints instead of chapters .

Overall, I Am Alive is a well balanced title that manages to demonstrate a horrifying look at the aftermath of an environmental disaster.  Ubisoft Shanghai created a world full of destruction, violence, and sadness with a realistic spin to it.  If you can get past the weak controls, goofy save system, and lack luster graphics, it’s an rewarding experience that will send a chill down your spine and may even get a tear in your eye (one scene in particular is quite possibly one of the most disturbing and saddening images I can recount seeing in a game).  If you’re looking for a title that doesn’t quite fit in with conventional adventure games on the market, check this one out.  After playing a game like this, you may want to stock up on bottled water, first aid kits, and rat meat.

One my most anticipated games of this year may not even see the light of day after several sources have confirmed that Prey 2 has been cancelled.

The Dutch gaming site PS Focus was the first to report on the news stating that it had multiple inside sources confirm the bad news.  According to the sources, publisher Bethesda Softworks made the call to can the title.

A representative from Bethesda Softworks told gaming publications that the company has no comment concerning the report.

Interestingly enough, gameplay videos for Prey 2 were suppose to be shown at this year’s Game Developers Conference, but Bethesda pulled the presentations right before the convention.  Also, another bad sign is that the title’s Facebook fan page has not been updated since Dec 2011.

Hopefully, this is not the actual case for Prey 2.  With the next installment being a open world/non-linear futuristic title, Prey 2 definitely seems promising.  Say it ain’t so, Bethesda!

Bethesda is looking to develop their own MMORPG based on the widely popular Elder Scrolls series.

According to an industry source, ZeniMax Online Studios and Bethesda will officially announce the title in May 2012.  Setting wise, the title will be rumored to take place a millennium before The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

As of now, the only gameplay details to be known is that players will choose between three fractions, each being represented by an animal (lion, dragon, and bird of prey).

The title is planned to make an appearance at E3 as well as Quakecon 2012 in August after the May announcement.

So far, ZeniMax Online Studios and Bethesda have given no comment concerning the matter.  Keep in mind that the companies were also planning on developing a MMO based on Fallout, which was rumored to have fell through.  Either way, there’s some kind of MMO in the works, but time will only tell.

Major Nelson confirmed this afternoon that Microsoft will increase the limit set for all XBLA and DLC in the coming months.

Nelson wrote on his blog that the limit for XBLA arcade titles will increase from 200 to 400 points, while the limit will be 30 achievements per title.  On the other hand, DLC will increase its limit by 50 points bringing it to 350 points per downloadable content.

The change will be implement in June.  However, according to the report, titles that are released between April 1 and May 31 have a choice between utilizing the new limit set or the old one.  Something tells me that developers would much rather have more obtaining points in their title, so choosing the new system is no brainer.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim took home the top honors yesterday evening at the  2012 Game Developers Choice Awards.

The epic RPG title scored the Game of the Year award, but that wasn’t the only AAA title to go home with a prize.  Puzzle title Portal 2 won Best Game Design, Best Audio, and Best Narrative.  For the Best Technology category, Battlefield 3 surprisingly won that prize, reigning supreme over such titles as L.A Noire and Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

After months of rumors and hints from various gaming outlets, Ubi Soft has finally announced the third installment in the Assassin’s Creed series.

The action, adventure title will indeed take place during the American Revolution, where our new protagonist is of half Indian descent fighting against the British during the war.  Rumor has it that the game will have a large, open area in which players are free to explore.  Developing cities will also be at the center of the game’s story with New York being a main locale in the title.

Ubi Soft was also nice enough to provide a launch trailer as well showing our hero fighting off against British soldiers in a snowy forest.  The trailer also showcases groups of British soldiers ready to wage war on the American troops with our protagonist looking from a distance.  It’s trailers like these that foreshadow the intensity to come especially when your enemy is the entire British armed force.

The game will be released on October 31 for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC.  Ubi Soft also announced that a Wii U version is in the works and is scheduled to be released at the end of 2012.

Those still uncertain that the next Assassin’s Creed title will take place during the American Revolution may change their view after hearing this update.  New promotional art for Assassin’s Creed 3 has further hinted that the game will indeed take place in 18th century colonial times.

The picture was taken by a Best Buy employee after the store received promotional art for the title.  The picture shows an unknown assassin (wearing the famous white assassin costume) wielding some late 1700′s weaponry like pistols, swords, and a crossbow.  Behind the figure is a large and tattered American flag.

The other picture, that was taken, mentions that the title will be formally announced on March 5, so just a few more days till Ubi Soft confirms the location.  After a picture like this though, we can safely assume that the game will indeed take place during the War of Independence.  Kind of a letdown, however.  I was really hoping that the setting would be the French Revolution to witness all of that guillotine goodness.

Since its launch in 2010, HBO Go is on a variety of streaming hardware, but now the popular video service will have one more device to add to its compatibility list, the Xbox 360.

HBO co-President Eric Kessler made the announcement at an event in San Francisco yesterday evening.  Kessler also revealed that the release date for the app will be on April 1, which is conveniently set on the same day as the season two premiere for Game of Thrones.

The application for the Xbox 360 will be exclusively for US console owners with no news of additional countries on the list at this time.

For those who don’t know, HBO Go is a premium video service that streams HBO content to various devices.  Movies and full/current original programming can be watched, but you must be subscribed to the channel through your cable provider.

It’s video apps like this that turn my Xbox 360 from a primary game console, to a video watching medium, but caaaan’t resist more HBO.

The critically acclaimed yet underrated Dreamcast title, Seaman, is reportedly in the works for the Nintendo 3DS according to one insider.

The adventure, utterly bizarre title was hinted as a 3DS title when Nintendo spoke about reviving past publishers titles as a new strategy for the the handheld system.  Though no specifics were mentioned, Nintendo used Seaman as an example during the report.

This would not be the first time a 3DS port has been mentioned for Seaman.  In 2010, Seaman creator Yoot Saito hinted in an interview that gamers could see the title become a part of the 3DS library in the near future.

For those who are not familiar with Seaman, basically it’s an adventure title where players go through a fish’s life stages from egg to adult fish.  Players take care of the fish throughout its life with the help from narrator Leonard Nimoy (oddly playing himself).  The one notable feature that the specimen have a fish’s body, but a human face, making the game truly frightening.

Though the title was barely played by American audiences, the game ended up being one of the top selling Dreamcast games of all time in Japan.

If there is one fictional series that takes everything cool and interesting about science fiction and puts it into a video game, it has to be Mass Effect.  The action RPG line of games has grown immensely in popularity since the first title’s release in 2007.  Finally, come March 6, the third installment will hit stores in the US (March 9 in Europe) giving reason once again for gamers to spend their free time indoors.  Bioware was kindly enough to offer a demo version of Mass Effect 3 on Tuesday, but because work has officially taken over my life and human spirit, I finally got a chance to test it out. The demo, which included two single player missions and a look at the multiplayer modes, gave an exciting look on what’s more to come for gamers.

The New and Improved Commander Shepherd

Before starting the first mission, players once again go through the long, yet hilarious process of creating their own character and back-story.  Of course, I have a save data file from Mass Effect 2, but for demo purposes, you need to create your own character once again.  This time around, I decided to go with the combination of Brian Peppers and Mr. Slave from South Park.  A man so ugly that it makes the Elephant Man look like Marilyn Monroe.  After creating your character’s past storyline, the opening cinematic begins.

We see Commander Shepherd stationed on Earth in the opening scene, staring out his window like a criminally insane person would.  Admiral Anderson quickly disrupts Shepherd’s daily window viewing, and warns his about possible Reaper activity that has hit the Moon.  While racing to the council room, Shepherd comes across Ashley, who managed to get an extreme makeover since we last saw her, and Ronnie from Jersey Shore.  As the council warns about a possible Reaper attack on Earth, all hell breaks loose as the Reapers finally hit Earth and unleash mass destruction.

Immediately after the cinematic, players take control of, Shepherd as Anderson and him race against time to reach the Normandy ship to warn the Alliance Council on the Citadel.  This first mission is simply a training one, introducing players to the updated controls as well as the cover system.  This section is more so meant to showcase the spectacle that is Mass Effect 3.  All around you, ships are exploding, buildings are falling.  We see that the Reapers mean business and human annihilation is their main objective.  The only hope for survival is to fight and judging by the Reaper threat, it will not be an easy one.  If there is one section of the game that is meant to foreshadow what’s to come in Mass Effect 3, Bioware did one hell of a job.  It isn’t till the second mission where we get a full glimpse of the gameplay.

And you thought things were bad in Syria...

The preceding section takes place around the middle of the game where we see Shepherd along with Urgnot Wrex and Garius as they make their way to a Salarian planet to rescue a female Krogan from a Salarian base.  Things go badly soon after their arrival with extremist group Cerberus reaching the base looking to exterminate the female Krogan.  This section is a bit more action oriented with players having the freedom to utilize not only your entire teammates’ firepower, but also their bionics.  Players will notice not only some old bionic powers, but new ones too like Garrius’ mine throwing skill that does some impressive damage to large groups of enemies.  Cerberus also has strengthened their elite soldiers, with a large variety of different types including ones that fly in on jetpacks and some that carry shields.  Not only is it satisfying to see some sort of change in enemy characters, but it brings a challenge to the table.  The mission concludes with a so-so boss fight against a Cerberus mecha-robot.  It was fairly simple and took mere minutes to defeat without little strategy.  However, knowing the epic boss fights from Mass Effect 2, I am sure there are more challenging ones to come.

Overall, I was impressed by what Mass Effect 3 had to offer.  Though the demo met my expectations, I would not say it blew me away, but that doesn’t mean that’s a bad thing.  My expectations are so high for Mass Effect 3 that after playing the demo; I have no doubt that that final product will be superb.  The graphics have improved as well as the cover control system and overall sound.  The RPG and conversation element has not changed, which is great because that is basically the foundation that series has been built upon.  There were minor issues I had including some graphical fumbles and gameplay issues (Anderson running through a wall), but then again it’s only a demo.  The wide selection of weapons and bionics is also something to note from the demo and I’m sure in the game’s final release, there will more to use in your quest.  All I know is that come March 6, I will put on hold all human interaction for several weeks and probably stop coming into work; I’ve got a galaxy to save.

The wait is over for Mass Effect fans, the demo for the highly anticipated Mass Effect 3 has gone live on the Xbox 360 for all users.

All Xbox 360 owners have access to the demo, which can be found in the game marketplace through the online network. This past weekend, only those with early access passes were able to download the trial version.

The demo features two single player stages with an introduction to the multiplayer aspect of the game.  Expect to make room on your Xbox 360 hard drive with the demo coming in at a file size of 1.76 GB.

The PC and PS3 demo will also be released sometime today, so be on the lookout for that.

Mass Effect 3 will be released on March 6 in the US and March 9 in Europe for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.  Keep on the lookout for my reactions to the demo hopefully in the coming days (damn you work!).

Naughty Dog, the creative minds behind the Uncharted series as well as the upcoming horror title The Last of Us, once considered making a new Jak and Daxter game, but quickly scraped the idea.

In an interview with Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells, the Naughty Dog team brainstormed the idea, but soon decided to go against it because they believed it was a disservice to Jak and Daxter fans.

“We’d all talked about it in interviews with fans asking, ‘Where’s the next Jak & Daxter?’ I don’t know if this is going to make them happy or sad, but we did explore the idea fairly extensively,” said Wells.  “We just realized we were going to just do everybody a disservice. So at that point, the conversations started to move in a new direction.”

When asked if there was a possibility of a new installment, Wells stated that because of Naughty Dog’s success and it’s long history in the gaming industry, it’s still up in the air.

Those who loved spending allowances and hours on the classic Simpson Arcade title will be exited about this news.  Komani has confirmed that a XBLA and PSN port of the title will be released very soon.

The developer announced that the XBLA version will be released tomorrow, February 3, and cost 800 MP.  The PSN port will not be available till next week on February 7.  One thing to note about the PSN version is that if you happen to be a Playstation Plus subscriber, the title is completely free to download.  If you are a standard user, the title will cost you $9.99.

The downloadable title will include a four player online cooperative mode, several additional new modes, and a never before seen Japanese version on the game that is reportedly longer than the original Western one we all know and love.

This is great news that Konami is finally porting the title to online gaming networks.  Finally, a classic arcade title that is truly worth my $10 of virtual currency and the best part is, I can keep my quarters.

If your PC did not perform well enough to play the action RPG The Witcher 2, now’s your chance to play the title on the Xbox 360 come this April.

The title will hit stores on April 19 for the Xbox 360. It was previously scheduled to be released in March, but was delayed a month.

Several screenshots of the Xbox 360 port were uploaded today that, well, aren’t too impressive graphics wise.  Then again, when you port a game that requires a high end PC to a home console with five year old technology, it’s not going to look very pretty.

Rumor has it that next month, Sony will officially announce two anticipated titles: God of War IV and Syphon Filter 4.

The story was reported by gaming publication Play in this month’s issue.  According to the article, the games will both be announced in February and will be set for a 2012 holiday launch.

This would not be the first time God of War IV has been rumored for a 2012 release.  Italy OPM had reported previously that the action title would be released sometime towards the end of this year.

Concerning Syphon Filter 4, the title had been rumored in the past, but Sony refused to release any information on a fourth entry as well as go against showcasing a title at last year’s E3.  Not only is a PS3 game in the works, but according to sources, a handheld version is in development as well.

A God of War IV is no surprise at this point with the series’ worldwide success.  The underrated Syphon Filter series does need another game in its collection, so let’s hope Sony makes it happen.

In a surprise move, Capcom has formally announced Resident Evil 6, which is set to hit shelves on November 20, 2012 for the Xbox 360 and PS3.

The developer also released a trailer this morning for the title that shows off a much older Chris Redfield and Leon Kennedy battling it out with, yes, zombies!  The game will take place in both the US and China with the T-Virus slowly spreading all over the world causing good old cannibalistic destruction.

Gameplay wise, we see some new execution moves both characters can do, but all looks about the same ever since the series went to a lower third person perspective from Resident Evil 4.  The title is said to have a co op player mode similar to that of Resident Evil 5.

“From the outset the team’s intention was to create an experience that delivers a gripping storyline, tense single-player and co-op action all set against a constant theme of horror. We are calling this fusion dramatic horror and are confident it will resonate with both existing fans of the series as well as newcomers,” said Executive Producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi.

“The development team is working tirelessly to deliver the most impressive Resident Evil title ever both in terms of scope and production values. We are all genuinely excited by the title and cannot wait to share it with the world.”

According to Kobayashi, the title has been in the works for the last two years with this being the first time the team has come out publicly concerning it.

Though a sixth installment was assumed, the surprising aspect is that Capcom announced it in the beginning of the year, rather than at one of the numerous gaming expos.  Great way to start the weekend I’d say.

Well, it looks like all the rumors about the possible announcement of Sony’s next system at E3 2012 can come to an end, for now.  The company announced it has no plans to reveal a new system at this year’s gaming expo.

Speaking at a CES Q and A roundtable, Sony Computer Entertainment Chairman and Ridge Racer enthusiast Kaz Hirai responded to a question concerning Sony’s new device stating that consumers won’t be hearing about it at E3 2012.

“Andy House is absolutely right in that we are not making any announcements at E3. I’ve always said a 10-year life cycle for PS3, and there is no reason to go away from that,” said Hirai.  Andy House is the current Sony Computer Entertainment President.

On the other front, Microsoft has not commented on what they will have in store for E3 2012 with next generation hardware.  However, I have a feeling they’re in their lairs right now creating a successor to the Xbox 360.  So readers, is this a good idea or bad one for Sony?
