A few years back, Cave (the developers of DeathSmiles) released a bullet hell shooter called Akai Katana overseas, they loved it, there are many crazy videos on Youtube of people showing off their high scores. On May 15th, we will be receiving a localized version of the game with HD graphics and 16:9 support.
If you are a fan of shoot-em up or bullet hell genre games, this is one that is completely worth checking out! Now, you may be wondering, “What do I get in this version of the game?”. Well no worries, I have a handy little cheat sheet for you, straight from the game description:
- Gorgeous hand-drawn artwork
- Three modes of gameplay
- Origin (Arcade)
- Slash
- Climax
- Fully animated UI
- Original Arcade settings (optional) for an authentic experience
- Online leaderboards and replays
- Local two-player co-op
- Frantic ‘bullet hell’ action

The game takes place in a warring Japan during the Taisho Period (1912-1926) and in the crazy alternate reality, people have discovered this crazy weapons called the Blood Swords. The Blood Swords receive their power by sacrificing the life of a close family member and with the horrific results of this power, some of the swordsmen have turned against the empire to try to stop the bloodshed once and for all. Did I mention the aircraft? No? They fly jets too! Pretty badass if I do say so myself.
If this is also your type of thing, they will also have some aesthetic DLC available for you as well. Here is the pricing and release schedule on that!
- Theme pack 1 (240 MSP) – May 7 (out now!)
- Picture pack 1 (160 MSP) – May 14
- Theme pack 2 (240 MSP) – May 21
- Picture pack 2 (160 MSP) – May 28
If you are up for a challenging experience, I really do recommend checking this one out. Shmup fans won’t want to miss out!
